An artistic experience that teaches as well as entertains is coming to Port Isabel Schools in January. The touring theater company, Artes de la Rosa, is coming from Fort Worth to perform a children’s play for students at the Garriga and Derry Elementary schools. The troupe uses professional teaching performers to stimulate audience participation. They make the children’s audience take part in the play and experience the magic of live theater story telling. It is a technique that helps students learn about acting while encouraging creativity, developing imagination and building confidence.
The play tells an old Mexican folk tale, El Conejito Verde (The Green Rabbit). It’s about a mischievous prince who learns the true meaning of love and loyalty after being transformed into a rabbit. The plot is guaranteed to hold children’s attention.
Sponsor of the visit is the El Paseo Arts Foundation (EPAF) based here in the communities around the Laguna Madre with the mission to promote appreciation of all the arts and enrich educational opportunities. EPAF has arranged for Artes de la Rosa to come with the generous help of local sponsors and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
EPAF’s overall goals are to foster arts education, nurture local talent, emphasize regional character and strengthen interest in the arts for all ages. Students will learn about acting and theater as Artes de la Rosa entertains while encouraging creativity, imagination and confidence.
The performance group has earned impressive awards: Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities; Best of the Arts Award by radio station WRR for Best Arts Experiences for Children, 2005-2011; Kennedy Center Capacity Building recipient (1 of 14 in the nation). Artes de la Rosa is dedicated to preserving, promoting and interpreting the art, culture, lives and history of the Latino Community.
