El Paseo Arts Foundation Announces Auditions for “Side by Side by Sondheim”

The sounds of music will fill the air this fall as El Paseo Arts Foundation begins rehearsals for its October 24th - 26th production of one of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals – Side by Side by Sondheim.  Auditions for the show will be held on Wednesday, September 5th and Thursday, September 6th at 6:30 p.m., at the Art Gallery in Lighthouse Square.  Directors Mary Hartman and JoAnn Evans will be looking for cast of 4 to 8 singers and a non-singing narrator.  Rehearsals will begin the week of September 10th.

The musical revue celebrates the early work of one of Broadway’s most talented composers, Stephen Sondheim.  The various sections of the show are tied together because the songs are from the same musical or because the music shares a common theme.  It is the narrator who explains all the connections to the audience and provides the transitions from one segment of the show to another.

One only needs to list the names of the shows from which the musical numbers for this show are chosen to realize that this is a musical that every singer would love to do and one that every audience will enjoy.  The list reads like a Who’s Who of Broadway musicals:  Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Anyone Can Whistle, Pacific Overtures, West Side Story and Do I Hear a Waltz?  Like Sondheim, the show is sophisticated, witty, and insightful, and every role is a starring role.

Anyone planning to audition should prepare a song for the audition.  It need not be one selected from the show. For additional information regarding the auditions, contact Mary Hartman at 956-943-3202.
