It’s a Rematch Between Bunco and Rocky as “Gopher Gap” Returns for Encore
The Ballad of Gopher Gap returns for an encore performance on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Doubleday’s Sports Bar in Port Isabel. More than 250 area residents and visitors joined in the fun for the first performance of El Paseo Arts Foundation’s good old fashioned melodrama at Louie’s Backyard on August 11th. Now, Manuel Hinojosa, owner of Doubleday’s has asked for a re-match of this epic battle between good and evil – a little sporting fun at the treasure-filled sports bar. Audience participation is part of the show! Sigh for the dainty heroine, cheer for the hero, and boo and hiss the villain.
Doors open on Tuesday, September 9th, at 6:30 p.m. for the show and the “curtain goes up” at 7:30 p.m. In classic melodrama tradition, the performance begins with an “olio”—a musical comedy revue with songs and laughs. The area’s own “Piano Man” Mike Schuler provides the music to help set the mood and a cast of twelve local characters bring the assorted zany inhabitants of Gopher Gap to life. It’s a play that has greed, evil plots, romance, unexpected twists, and lots of bad jokes.
Will Bunco DeSneer succeed in his plot to swindle the unsuspecting Easterners out of their savings? Will Judge Abercorombie recoup his losses and get out of Gopher Gap? Will Ottille or Attille charm Bunco with their feminine wiles? Will Rocky and Muggs defeat Bunco and his scheming partners? Will Verlinda and Rocky find true love? Will Becky remain poor and lonely? Will Nanette find her long-lost child? Will Slats and Flora get their just desserts? Will Minerva Hotchkiss get her big story? Don’t miss the chance to be part of the fun and find our the answers to these questions as the exciting finish unfolds with guns blazing, fists flying and the cast chasing Bunco through the audience.
Tickets for the production are $15 per person/ $5 for students under the age of 16. Tickets can be purchased with a credit card online at http://www.elpaseoarts.com.
